A short film to make the male chauvinistic violence visible

Fourteen Erasmus students and eleven ESN volunteers from five different local ESN sections in Spain took part in this ESAA-project of recording a short film on chauvinistic violence. Many women suffer from male chauvinistic violence on their daily basis, because it is a structural problem of our society. In this short film, some of them have the opportunity to talk and make this problem visible, so we can raise awareness of it.

Women suffer from male chauvinistic violence on their daily lives. Sometimes it is physical violence, sometimes it is psychological violence and sometimes it is other kind of violence - but it is always a consequence of the male chauvinistic system we live in. This short film has been created in order to give voice to women who have suffered from any of these kinds of violence and want to make it public.

Therefore, the main objective of the short film was to raise awareness about the different kinds of violence that women suffer on a daily basis. There were two other goals:

  • To give victims of these kinds of violence the opportunity to tell their stories from a safe platform.
  • To create the opportunity for members of ESN and Erasmus students to get to know women who had suffered from these kinds of violence and learn how to act in these situations.

Film production

Fourteen Erasmus students and eleven ESN volunteers from five different local ESN sections took part in the recording of the short film. The writing of the script was reviewed by the Department of Equality of the City Hall of Alcalá de Henares. The makeup of the actresses and actors was made by volunteers of the Paula Díaz Professional Center. The spaces used for the recording of the short film were provided by the Lope de Vega Dormitory.

Outreach and impact

The tight collaboration between the different partners made it possible for the short film to have such a great success: it was viewed by more than 20 thousand people and shared more than 200 times in different social media platforms. It was shared in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. In Facebook it reached more than 62 thousand people and was viewed by more than 18 thousand of them. Also, more than 1200 people reacted to the short film or shared it. In Instagram it was viewed by more than 530 people. In Twitter it was viewed by more than 360 people. So, the goals of the short film were fulfilled, having a great impact and contributing to raise awareness about this problem. Moreover, by raising awareness about the problem, the short film supported cluster 2, component 3 (Facilitate access to Erasmus+); due to the huge impact it had inside and outside the Erasmus community, it gave more visibility to the Erasmus programme, supporting cluster 2, component 2 (Increase knowledge of the Erasmus+ programme); and by creating a safe platform for women to share their stories, it supported cluster 3, component 1 (Give voice to marginalised populations).

In conclusion, it had a great impact and helped in the development of great synergies between the partners and the participants. Follow this link to watch the short film on Twitter.
