EMANATE - The EMA Magazine for Social Inclusion, Empowerment, and Participation

The Erasmus Mundus Association successfully issued two editions of the EMAnate Magazine. “Winds of Change” and “Does it Matter?” were the two central themes chosen by the Editors in Chief and the Head of the Communications Team of the Association. More than 20 volunteer collaborators and contributors from across the globe crafted the publications.

The EMAnate Magazine was a long-standing process for over a decade until it was put on stand-by for a few years. At the beginning of 2019, the Communication Team of the Erasmus Mundus Association (EMA) submitted the project to the Erasmus Students and Alumni Association (ESAA) to bring back the publication and issued two editions; "Winds of Change" and "Does it Matter?" were the two central themes chosen by the Editorial board, led by the Head of Communications Oxana Sytnik and Editors in Chief Gabriella Mikiewicz and Estefanía Zárate Angarita.

The first issue, "Winds of Change" focused on the changes being undergone by the Erasmus Mundus Association, the Erasmus Mundus experience, changes affecting the European Union and the world, such as climate change and Brexit. This issue was published online on the 3rd of June and has so far reached 644 reads and 1.085 impressions as well as a total of Facebook interactions of 255 and 115 Facebook shares.

The second issue, "Does it Matter?" was published online on the 7th of July. It was inspired by another EMA project under the same name that aimed at bringing people together regardless of their differences. This edition is "advocating for respect, understanding, and empathy regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, social status, religious beliefs, skin colour, diverse abilities - or any other human condition -", as it can be read on the Letter from the Editors.

The Writing Competition and Photo Competition for each issue received more than 20 submissions from every continent thanks to the open call promoted through Instagram and Facebook. Also, volunteering collaborators from EMA participated by writing news stories, briefs, columns, interviews and content for the Magazine. In total, more than 20 people from the Association were involved in the writing and design of the two issues. Soon, 20 hard copies of the Magazine will be printed and distributed.

The specific objectives proposed by the project were the following:

  1. The Erasmus Mundus Association Communications team will publish two printed issues of the EMANATE Magazine between March and July 2019, with input from ESN, OCEANS, GaragErasmus, and ESAA.
    a. Two issues of the Magazine were published online, and 20 hard copies will be printed.
    b. There were inputs from some of the member organisations.
  2. The EMANATE team and the EMA Communications Team will work together to promote the worldwide Erasmus+ Programme, the Erasmus Mundus programmes, and European higher education within marginalized populations.
    a. Through the stories submitted by collaborators and the sections chosen by the Editorial Board, the Magazine accomplished to give the readers a broad idea of the impact of Erasmus Programmes on the students' lives, especially those with less privileged backgrounds.
  3. The Magazine will promote the values of inclusion, social empowerment, and celebration of diversity. With an international staff behind the helm of this project, we will encourage participation from a diverse, international, and multidisciplinary and intersectional group of students, alumni, partners, readers, and more.
    a. Both issues were carefully reviewed by the EMAnate Team to assure that the EMA values of diversity and excellence were at the core of the stories.
  4. The EMANATE team aims to use the magazine in-print, online, and through social media for the co-promotion of ESAA member organizations. There will be an article online, in print, and shared on social media about each MO and an article about ESAA in the first issue.
    a. Due to the amount of content received from volunteering collaborators, we did not include an article about each Member Organisation.
    b. The second issue included an article about ESAA call for projects and a mention of each one of the MO.
  5. The EMA Communications Team will design, create, and run an online platform for EMANATE Magazine, with a blog portion and interactive content.
    a. Due to the tight deadlines, the online platform is under construction and will be launched with the same content of the two issues of the Magazine.
