The Mediterranean Women Ship (MWS) Preparing phase for a mega project
Based on innovative and non-traditional dialogue, 16 young men and women worked together for 4 days, in Beirut, Lebanon, from April 14, 2023 to April 17, 2023 to discuss innovative ways for minimising the challenges facing the women in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The Mediterranean Youth Foundation for Development hosted in cooperation with the “Oceans Network” through the Erasmus+ student and Alumni Alliance (ESAAeu) call for proposals funded by the “European Commission” to launch the “Mediterranean Women Ship”.
How It Worked?
The aim of the project was:
- Raising awareness of the challenges facing women in the Mediterranean region.
-Strengthening the role of young women and men in gender issues in the Mediterranean region.
-Empowering girls and women in the Mediterranean region, especially their social empowerment.
-Launching awareness campaigns, as well as supporting and gaining support to combat hate speech directed against Mediterranean girls and women, and teaching participants how to deal with it.
-Creating safe dialogue spaces to express women's issues in the Mediterranean region.
-Building the capacities of young men and women on mechanisms for dialogue in gender issues.
-Peer Education/Women for Women about their rights, particularly the right to freedom of movement for girls and women in the Mediterranean region.
How was social media used?
Before the workshops started, the Mediterranean Youth Foundation launched an online awareness campaign to raise awareness of the audience about the issue and challenges facing women in the Mediterranean region, the cost of gender inequality in different fields and the women leaders in the region those who faced many challenges and finally they could overcome it.
Outcomes
The gap will take another 356 years! And the economic and social gap in the Mediterranean region will not be closed for another 111 years.
In the Mediterranean region, the Gender Gap Report indicates that only 60% of the gender gap is closed in the Middle East and North Africa region, contrary to Europe which succeeded in closing 75% of it. It is noteworthy that the gender gap in the Middle East is considered one of the largest gaps in the world. Then comes East Asia and the Pacific succeeding to close 68% of it. The Global Gender Gap Report concluded that the Mediterranean region is facing severe misuse of talent and that its acts to close the gender inequality gap are considered to be slow, which may threaten economic growth and limit development opportunities.
So, with the project social media coverage during its 3 phases we reached about 33.754 K on FB, LinkedIn and Instagram and we published around 100 posts and stories that could get about 25K impressions and also around 15K engagements &shares.
Also, the number of applicants on the participation form exceeded 230 women and men.
